Art Retreats

Learning From the Masters!

Throughout the year, we will be running Week-Long Art Intensives and Week-End Retreats with some of our fabulous Art Masters from around the country. These are the same classes you would pay twice as much for at the Las Vegas Glass Craft Expo. Don't miss these opportunities to take your skills to the next level and learn from the very best.

Stained Glass Art Intensive
March 24th through March 28th, 2008

Come join us for a week of stained glass classes from Cathy Claycomb's "Let's Learn Something Different" series of nationally touring classes.

Each class is $150 by itself for a total of $750. However you can get the entire week for only $650. That's a savings of $100! The classes run from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday through Friday. All skill levels are welcome.

Sticks and Stones
3/24/2008
Combine non-traditional glass objects to fabricate ultra-contemporary panels. Learn to work with Kokomo rondels, found items or head glass. Simple tips on fabrication platforms allow you to combine items of irregular thickness into panels of unlimited size. Use luxurious add-ons to create "upholstered glass." Use common materials to produce "bronze" reinforcement that allows open-ended design and dramatic dimension. After this class, you may never make a flat glass panel again! This is not your mother's idea of stained glass!

Wall Jewelry
3/25/2008
NO WINDOWS-JUST GLASS!

Complete contemporary work designed to imitate gems, polished stone, or fossils with textured jewelry-like metal trim. No need for windows with dazzling glass designs that are completely light independent and showcase them with feet to stand away from the wall. Learn to engineer work with graceful curved perimeters, multi level construction and "found items". Select glass for its unique markings and texture rather than its color. Create with glass, custom designed Kokomo rondels, glass globs or other unique elements.

Hidden Images
3/26/2008
COPPER FOIL OVERLAY AS YOU HAVE NEVER SEEN IT!

New process! Developed to produce amazing detail not possible with traditionally cut stained glass. Once thought of as incidental decoration, learn how to make copper foil overlay the main focus of your work. Execute large areas of solder as well as very fine detail and add solder "sculpture" to imitate feathers, muscle and 3-D shaping found in nature.

Students work additional areas on the back of the glass, resulting in surprise "hidden images" when backlit. Featured in numerous publications, signature works are executed on "head glass" and are displayed in fine art galleries and private collections across the globe. This class will dispel every rule about working directly on the glass, heat fracture, design mass, adhesion and more! Work a stained glass panel without cutting glass!

Floating Rondells
3/27/2008
Learn to create a high profile "solder field" with decorative, sculptured solder on which to design a contemporary work featuring rondels that appear to float above the surface. Begin with a dramatically shaped base: explore hanging apparatus, surface preparation, full solder coverage and reinforcing techniques. Design rondel arrangement according to thickness and proximity of other rondels. Add peripheral glass decoration directly to solder surface.

Discuss and execute engineering principals and weight support system to allow rondels to float above or attach to each other. Add further drama with patina techniques that highlight the unexpected juxtaposition of richly textured solder and smooth glistening glass.

Glass-Straight Up!
3/28/2008
Free form, freestanding sculpture.

Forget about window space. It's time to take glass into your living space! Opulent free form glass joins with graceful metal shapes to create sculptural works of art.

You will work with one of a kind elements as well as flat sheet glass to create contemporary multidimensional designs with the capabilities to reflect multi-glass color light play.

Special attention will be paid to the engineering aspects of support and color options as well as building a customized platform system. Non-traditional surface decoration might involve fused elements, pewter attachments, and clever camouflage of soldered seams.

Silk Experience (Silk Painting Workshop)
with Karen Leeds

Like the other "Art, Courage & Creativity" sessions, the emphasis will be placed on exploration and the creative process itself. However, instead of 3 hours, the workshop is 2 1/2 days, and instead of oil pastels & paper, participants will use French dyes and silk. Basic silk painting techniques and resources will be shared, and attendees will make and take home 4 silk paintings (21 x 21 inches, 6 x 24 inches, 8 x 54 inches and 12 x 60 inches), all suitable for wearing or framing.

These classes are packed with tips and demonstrations. Attendees will learn about different grades of silk, resist, special effects, fixatives, how to paint with dye, how to build frames, how to make silk steamers, and also how to prepare the finished silk for the steaming process. We will wrap silk and steam on the spot! This is particularly useful as many silk workshops do not have the time or space to devote to these important steps. While we cover a lot of technical ground, we will also pay close attention to our creative voices --- honoring what that looks and feels like for each individual through visualization and meditative exercises.
